The Virginia Symphony Orchestra Chorus is now in its twentieth season, and its thirteenth under the direction of Chorus Master Robert Shoup. In addition to regular appearances with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, the chorus has performed outside Hampton Roads to remarkable acclaim. Following a 1999 concert tour of Central Europe, during which the chorus played to sold-out houses in Prague and Vienna under the baton of Mr. Shoup, they traveled with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra to Washington, D. C. in January, 2000, to make their Kennedy Center debut, performing Sir William Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast. In the summer of 2001, the chorus returned to Central Europe at the invitation of the International Dvorak Festival, once again with Mr. Shoup at the helm, and performed concerts in Salzburg, Munich, Brno, and Prague. During the summers of 2003 and 2004, the chorus took part in the Breckenridge Music Festival at Breckenridge Colorado. In May of 2007, the chorus was an integral part of the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown Celebration, attended by the Queen of England and President Bush. In June and July of 2007, the chorus traveled once again to Europe, presenting concerts in Prague, Leipzig and Berlin.

During the 2009– 2010 concert season, the symphony chorus will present several exciting works. In October, a performance of Brahms' Requiem will be presented at Norfolk's Chrysler Hall. Celebrating the holiday season, the chorus will perform Handel's Messiah in December, and will also be a part of the symphony's popular Holiday Pops program. In late January of 2010, the chorus will present one of the most significant orchestral/choral works, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in three of Hampton Roads' top symphonic venues - Chrysler Hall, the Ferguson Center for the Arts and The Sandler Center. In April, the chorus will be a featured participant in a performance of Bernstein's Mass, as part of the Virginia Arts Festival, an acclaimed annual event.
With nearly 100 talented singers (including approximately twenty professional core members), the roster is determined by audition of new singers and annual re-audition for current members. The ensemble is committed to the highest levels of symphonic choral performance and of vocal and musical skill. Auditions are open to any singer in the community, and may be arranged by contacting Ray Landon, Chorus Manager, at the Virginia Symphony Orchestra office, (757) 466-3060, or: rlandon@virginiasymphony.org
