Elizabeth Coulter Vonderheide,
Assistant Principal Second Violin

Elizabeth Coulter Vonderheide, a native of Lynchburg, Virginia, began violin studies at age 5. She studied with Dr. Svend Ronning at the University of Virginia while in high school, and received her Bachelor of Music from Indiana University in the studio of the late Franco Gulli. While in Indiana she played with the Camerata Orchestra, the Owensboro Symphony (in Kentucky), and the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic.

Elizabeth earned the Master of Music in Orchestral Performance at the Manhattan School of Music, studying with Glenn Dicterow, Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. While in New York, she served as Concertmaster of the Manhattan School of Music Philharmonia and Chamber Orchestras, appeared as soloist both with the Claremont Ensemble and in a live broadcast on New York’s WNYC FM, and performed as a regular member of the Kalaiope String Quartet and the DiCappo Opera Orchestra. She also had the opportunity to play under renowned conductors such as Kurt Masur, David Robertson, Pierre Boulez, and Julius Roudel.

Elizabeth has also soloed with and performed as a member of the Virginia Symphony, The National Repertory Orchestra, the orchestra of the Spoleto, Italy Festival, the orchestra of the American Institute of Musical Study (Graz, Austria), and the Quartet-in-Residence at Quisisana Resort in Center Lovell, Maine. In January 2007 she performed as a member of the Requiem for Darfur orchestra in Carnegie Hall. She regularly appears on the Organ Swell recital series, has performed on the Feldman Chamber Music Series, and has been a guest artist at Randolph College in Lynchburg.

Elizabeth joined the orchestra as Assistant Principal Second Violin in 2003. She is married to Dave Vonderheide, Second Trumpet with the VSO, and they live in Portsmouth with their dog Marty.
