Hazel Dean Davis, horn
Hazel Dean Davis, originally from St. Paul, MN, joined the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in 2004 as the fourth horn. Hazel graduated from Harvard University in 2003 with a degree in Biological and Social Anthropology. At Harvard, she studied with James Sommerville and was active in the chamber and orchestral music scene, receiving both the David McCord Prize for Music and the Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts. Hazel appeared as a soloist at Harvard in the Britten Serenade in 2001 and in the world premier of American composer Carson Cooman's Enchanted Pathways, written for her in 2003. In addition to Mr. Sommerville, Hazel has studied with Caroline Lemen and Kendall Betts in St. Paul, and with Julie Landsman at The Juilliard School. She has attended the Aspen Music Festival, the Tanglewood Music Center, Pacific Music Festival, and the Marlboro Chamber Music Festival. A recent finalist for the Boston Symphony, Hazel continues to play regularly in Boston, both as an extra with the BSO and as a member of the chamber music society, Arcturus. When not playing horn, Hazel loves exploring new terrain and immersing herself in unique cultures and environments. Hazel and her husband Steve had their first child in January 2008.
