R. Scott McElroy, Principal Trombone
Virginia Symphony Principal Trombonist R. Scott McElroy first began playing trombone during his elementary school years in his native Ann Arbor, Michigan. He studied privately during school years and in the summers attended the Blue Lakes Fine Arts Camp and the internationally acclaimed Interlochen For The Arts. In high school he was invited to perform in Europe as principal trombonist of the Blue Lake International Orchestra. Mr. McElroy continued his studies at The University of Michigan with trombonist H. Dennis Smith, and after receiving his Bachelor of Music degree in 1985, he performed one summer as co-principal trombone of the Colorado Philharmonic. Mr. McElroy studied two summers as a Fellow at the Tanglewood Institute of Music, where he played under the batons of great conductors like Leonard Bernstein and John Williams. Before moving to Norfolk in 1988, he performed as Principal Trombonist of the Saginaw Symphony Orchestra in Michigan, and was a member of the Detroit Chamber Winds and the Detroit Contemporary Chamber Ensemble. Mr. McElroy lives on the Lafayette River in Norfolk, Virginia. He enjoys boating with his wife Ruth (an aerospace engineer at NASA) and their two children, Christopher and Patrick.
