Joanne Meyer White, flute
Joanne Meyer White is second flute with the Virginia Symphony, a position she has held since 1996. She studied flute at Boston University and McGill University in Montreal earning her Bachelor and Masters degrees, respectively. Her teachers include Timothy Hutchins, Doriot Dwyer and summer studies with Peter Lloyd. Prior to moving to Virginia Joanne performed in the New England area most notably as principal flute of the Vermont Symphony. She has taught at many local institutions including William and Mary, East Carolina University, Virginia Wesleyan, Hampton University and the Academy of Music in Norfolk as well as teaching privately. Joanne serves on the advisory board for the Hampton Roads Flute Faire, an annual event that seeks to educate and nurture area flutists. She participates in the Organ Swell recital series as part of the Virginia Arts Festival. Married to Christopher White, assistant principal bass with the Symphony, together they have two children; Brayton Nathaniel and Evelyn Virginia. Joanne loves being part of the Hampton Roads music community and thoroughly enjoys teaching young flutists. You will find her pushing a double stroller around Ghent whenever possible.
