Summer 2007 – Concert venues in Prague, Leipzig and Berlin fill with sounds of glorious voices as chorusmaster Robert Shoup leads the Virginia Symphony Chorus in its third European tour.
Fall 2007 - Concert halls in Hampton Roads fill with sounds of glorious voices as Robert Shoup begins his eleventh season leading the Virginia Symphony Chorus. Critics have hailed his choral ensembles as “enthralling,” and “totally mesmerizing.” He conducts both choral and instrumental repertoire for many Virginia Symphony concerts. Highlights of this season include the Glorious Puccini concerts, a Holiday Favorites Celebration, the 1812 Overture concerts with choral accompaniment, and the Fauré Requiem.
In 2006-2007, Robert Shoup celebrated his 10th anniversary season with a Virginia Festival of American Voices in collaboration with the Virginia Symphony and the Virginia Chorale. The project was awarded an NEA “American Masterpieces” grant. The Festival culminated in a statewide WHRO television broadcast of the American Voices concert featuring Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and the world premiere of Stirring the Silence by composer Dan Locklair. In May 2007, he prepared an 1800 voice chorus for performances with the Virginia Symphony in the Jamestown 400th anniversary centerpiece concert led by JoAnn Falletta.
Robert Shoup has conducted the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra, the Prague Radio Orchestra and the Czech State Philharmonic Orchestra and worked with choruses around the United States.
A graduate of Duquesne University with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education (voice) and Master’s degree in Conducting from Carnegie Mellon University.
Mr. Shoup serves as Minister of Music at Freemason Street Baptist Church in Norfolk.
