David Wick, Principal Horn
David Wick is currently principal horn for the Virginia Symphony and the Virginia Opera. Although he was among the few people who actually witnessed “the day the music died” at the Surf Ballroom on February 3, 1959, he has been keeping music alive with the Virginia Symphony. As soloist with the Virginia Symphony he has performed Mozart's Horn Concertos, Sinfonia Concertante, Britten's Serenade, and Martin's Concerto for Seven Winds and Percussion. He has also performed with the Eastern Philharmonic Orchestra and Chamber Players, the Skaneateles Festival, The Norfolk Chamber Consort, and the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra. His most memorable moment with the symphony was performing at Carnegie Hall.
Mr. Wick is originally from Clear Lake, Iowa, and holds degrees from the University of Iowa and Indiana University, where he studied with Philip Farkas. Since then, his college affiliations have included Coe and Cornell Colleges in Iowa, Christopher Newport University, Old Dominion University, and the College of William and Mary. Currently, he lives in Virginia Beach with his wife, Mary, a teacher at Norfolk Academy, daughter, Sarah, a freshman at Randolph-Macon Woman’s college, and three cats. In his spare time, David enjoys reading, bicycling, exploring tea and wine, and tinkering with his 34-year old Triumph TR 6 roadster.
