VIRGINIA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Virginia Symphony’s trademark slogan is “the sound is all around you”. Even when sound is not that of music, there are sounds we hear everyday. Some of these sounds are loud, some are soft; some are weak, some are strong; some are pleasant to our ears and some are not. What makes sound travel from one place to another? What kind of sound is music?
Under the masterful baton of Conductor Matthew Kraemer, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra will help you explore the “Science of Sound”. By listening to the selections of symphonic music in this special concert, put together especially for your enjoyment, you will learn more about:

  • How Sound Travels
  • Frequency (High sounds and low sounds)
  • Decibels (How sound is measured)
  • Timbre (The uniqueness and special features of sounds)

LISTEN! THE SCIENCE OF SOUND IS ALSO ALL AROUND YOU.
