Free Virginia Symphony Concerts Open Cultural Season Labor Day Weekend

Live Recording of September 1st Newport News Concert to be Available

Hampton Roads, VA… To celebrate the opening of the cultural season in Hampton Roads, join the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Virginia’s premier Symphony Orchestra, as it kicks off its 2006-2007 season with three free concerts Labor Day weekend, September 1-3, where listeners can experience why everyone is talking about the Virginia Symphony. A live recording of the Friday, September 1st concert at the Ferguson Center for the Arts will be made and the CD will be released for sale by December 1, 2006.

Please note: Tickets are required for the Friday, September 1st concert because of its indoor location at the FergusonCenter for the Arts. Tickets are available by calling the Symphony Box Office: 757.892.6366. Tickets are not needed for the Yorktown or Chesapeake concerts.

Americana… The Dream Comes Alive concerts feature patriotic musical selections designed to salute our American heritage and Jamestown’s 400th anniversary. A boisterous fanfare salute to Jamestown by James Hosay commissioned by the Virginia Symphony leads off the concerts. Other selections include Victory at Sea, Amazing Grace Fanfare by Adolphus Hailstork, America the Beautiful, Stars and Stripes Forever and more.

The concerts, will take place in Newport News, Friday, September 1, 7:00 p.m. at the FergusonCenter for the Arts; in Yorktown, Saturday, September 2, 7:30 p.m.YorktownMonument; and in Chesapeake, Sunday, September 3, 7:00 p.m. in JubileePark. These annual concerts are sponsored by the respective cities.

Music Director JoAnn Falletta conducts all three concerts. The Symphony will be joined by the Virginia Symphony Chorus under the direction of chorusmaster Robert Shoup. This will be the first time Ms. Falletta has conducted the concert in Chesapeake.
