Hampton Roads, VA…There will be a Mall Ball of Fun Saturday, October 6, at Greenbrier Mall as horns, violins, cellos, basses, trumpets, trombones, timpani and more  fill Center Court of the retail center with the familiar strains of Bizet’s Carmen, the First Movement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, Strauss’s Radetzky March and Percy Grainger’s Irish Tune from County Derry. It’s all part of the Virginia Symphony’s Community Play Along, a tradition in Norfolk that the Symphony has expanded to Chesapeake this year. One of the Symphony’s Music for Life education programs, the Play Along at 2pm features a public performance with Chesapeake Public School students playing a side- by- side concert with the VSO musicians. Then the fun really begins as an open invitation is extended to musicians of all ages to Play-Along as the VSO performs again excerpts from Carmen, Strauss’s Radetzky March and Irish Tune by Percy Grainger. The music to be played may be downloaded from www.virginiasymphony.org and clicking on Education and Community.

From tubas to kazoos, from toy xylophones to accordions, from Suzuki violins to French Horns, young curly tops and Grey Panthers and every age in between are invited to play with the VSO. Open registration for the Play Along is from 2:00pm to 3pm, Twenty minute Play-Alongs will be performed at 3pm and 3:30pm. Registrants can even win a chance to conduct the orchestra.

The Play Alongs will be conducted by Matthew Kraemer, assistant conductor of the Virginia Symphony. Says Kraemer, “Our annual Play-Alongs give the community the chance to join the professionals of the Virginia Symphony performing terrific music in an entertaining setting.  No matter your age or ability, join us at Greenbrier Mall for a fun-filled afternoon.  I look forward to seeing you there, tuned up and ready to play.”
