Virginia Symphony Orchestra Performs Glorious Puccini at St. Bede

Concert with Virginia Symphony Chorus on October 18

Hampton Roads, VA…Conductor Robert Shoup and the Virginia Symphony Chorus join the Virginia Symphony Orchestra for Glorious Puccini, Thursday, October 18, 8pm at St. Bede, Williamsburg. Just returning from their summer 2007 tour of central Europe, the Chorus presents this concert in celebration of the wonderful sounds of Puccini and Dvorak. The VSO and VSC will highlight Dvorak’s Carnival Overture and Te Deum and Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, an early piece that foreshadowed his coming operatic greatness. The performance also features soloists Ann Scott, soprano, Kerry Jennings, tenor, and Christopher Mooney, baritone.

Ann Scott was a member of the Virginia Chorale for four seasons and has performed with the Virginia Opera, the Virginia Symphony, and other local groups. She was the soprano soloist for the Chorus’s summer 2007 European tour. During the summer of 2005, Ms. Scott participated in master classes with internationally renowned opera singers Bo Skovhus and Gabriella Lechner at the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria. She is now a part of the staff and faculty at The Academy of Music in Norfolk.

Kerry Jennings has performed in a number of roles including Martin in The Tender Land, Alfred in Die Fledermaus, and Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors. Recently, he joined the Long Leaf Opera for a world premier of Strange Fruit. An advocate for educational outreach, Dr. Jennings has performed with Northwest Opera In Schools Etcetera (NOISE) and Opera for Kids by FBN Productions. He has been on the music faculty at Old Dominion University since 2006.

Christopher Mooney made his debut at the Aspen Music Festival as Marcello in La Boheme. He has appeared with New York City Opera, the Aspen Opera Theatre, Connecticut Grand Opera, the Caramoor Festival, and others. With a versatile repertoire, Mr. Mooney has also shared the stage with notables such as Sherrill Milnes, Renee Flemming, Jerome Hines, and Marcello Giordani. He currently is on the voice faculty at Christopher Newport University and sings regularly with The Williamsburg Chorale and the Norfolk Chamber Consort.
