Mezzo-Soprano Sarah Williams has embarked on a very promising career, both in opera and on the concert stage. The Washington Post exclaimed that her voice is, “warm, clear and colorful.” She has sung with Israel Opera, Virginia Opera, Sarasota Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Contemporary Chamber Opera, American Lyric Theater of New York City, Spoleto Festival USA and at the Bard Summerscape Festival. Her operatic roles include Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Mere Marie in Les Dialogues of the Carmelites, Adalgisa in Norma, Mallika in Lakme, Florence in Albert Herring, Suse in Der Vampyr, Berta in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Olga and Larina in Eugene Onegin. Equally at home in musical theater Williams has performed such roles as Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, Wendy in Peter Pan, Meg in Brigadoon and A Cole Porter Cabaret show in New York City. As an oratorio soloist, she has performed the Kodaly Missa Brevis, Handel’s Messiah and the Beethoven Missa Solemnis. An avid recitalist, Williams has appeared throughout North America and Europe.
A proponent of contemporary and lesser-known music, Williams was hailed by the Tel Aviv Times as a “huge talent, full of temperament and pinache” for the portrayal of the title role of Jo in Little Women in Israel. Composer Mark Adamo was at this performance and has since requested her for many of his works. Ms. Williams created the role of Veruca Salt in a world premiere of Peter Ash’s The Golden Ticket with American Lyric Theater in New York City, conducted by the composer himself. Of her performance in A Month in the Country by Lee Hoiby in New York City, the New York Times raved: “Sarah Williams did a fantastic job as Arkady’s nightmare mother, Anna.” Her critically acclaimed portrayal of Anna can be heard on the Albany Label.
A winner of numerous awards and honors, Williams was a Los Angeles Opera finalist and a winner of the NATS competition. Williams is an alumna of the prestigious young artist programs at Sarasota Opera and Chautauqua Opera where she was seen as Dolcina in Suor Angelica and Vittoria in The Gondoliers.
Praised for her versatility, Williams has also worked extensively abroad including touring Italy, performing with Centro Studi Lirica. She received her Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music, her Bachelor of Music degree from Westminster Choir College and maintains an active teaching studio.
