Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong: A Musical Tribute

Thursday, September 29, 2016 | Ferguson Center for the Arts, Newport News
Saturday, October 1, 2016 | Chrysler Hall, Norfolk

 Ankush Bahl, conductor

What a Wonderful World. It's Too Marvelous for Words. Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald were able to show the world how wonderful and marvelous the world really is with their songs that since have become timeless jazz standards. Fitzgerald, born in Newport News in 1917, was the most popular female jazz singer in the U.S. for nearly half a century, selling more than 40 million albums and receiving 13 Grammy awards. Armstrong, born in New Orleans in 1901, was an inventive and pioneering jazz trumpet and cornet player. Their music changed the course of American music history.

The Music of Elton John

Friday, November 4, 2016 | Ferguson Center for the Arts, Newport News
Saturday, November 5, 2016 | Chrysler Hall, Norfolk

Sir Elton John, with 37 gold and 27 multi-platinum albums and 250 million records sold worldwide, the third-most successful artist in the history of the American charts (behind only Elvis and The Beatles), is a force of musical nature. It's reasonable to say no one can hold a Candle in the Wind to the astronomic Rocket Man, who has been honored time and again for his poignant and transcendent rock ballads that still hum in the hearts of listeners worldwide. Join the VSO as we honor and celebrate this larger-than-life Pop Rock icon with the Music of Elton John.

Classical Mystery Tour

Thursday, February 2, 2017 | Ferguson Center for the Arts, Newport News
Friday, February 3, 2017 | Chrysler Hall, Norfolk

It's The Beatles Classical Mystery Tour–four musicians with the same sweet sound and groovy look as Liverpool's Fab Four–tune up for a concert of classics like "Penny Lane," "Yesterday," and "I Am the Walrus," all performed exactly as they were written. The Los Angeles Times called the show "more than just an incredible simulation... the swelling strings and soaring French horn lines gave the performance a high goose-bump quotient... the crowd stood and bellowed for more." Be there when the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Classical Mystery Tour Come Together and journey down the Long and Winding Road of the Beatles' best hits.
