VIRGINIA SYMPHONY LEAGUE NEWSLETTER: NOVEMBER 2013
Dear League members,
Our gala was a roaring success! The team work of the gala committee and our volunteers was outstanding! Many thanks to Tom and Jaci Meurer, who took reservations, spent hours on table assignments, and kept track of expenditures and income. Jeanine Lindberg was in charge of graphics and produced Save the Date cards, invitations and a program book that was just beautiful! Cam Shannon sold advertisements and gathered donated items for the silent auction. Donna Hudgins spent hours contacting sources to provide publicity for the event. Though not on the committee, League member Thelma Oser not only obtained donations for the silent auction, she also managed to solicit a sponsor for the gala. Peggy Pezzella lent her expertise at organizing the silent auction, and we couldn't have had such a wonderful evening without the help of Eric Borenstein and the VSO staff.
We enjoyed working with Young Audience members Marty Einhorn, Beth Hazelette and Michael Williams. Their efforts, combined with ours, produced a synergy that resulted in a wonderful and meaningful event. We raised money, honored League member Minette Cooper and had a wonderful time!
CELEBRATE! RECAP: The Virginia Symphony League and Young Audiences of Virginia joined together to present CELEBRATE! on November 2, 2013 at the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. The gala raised over $65,000 to benefit student education programs of both the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Young Audiences of Virginia. This was accomplished through a live auction, a silent auction, a paddle raise, sponsors, advertisements, benefactors and donors.
Long time VSL member and champion of the arts, Bettie Minette Cooper was the evening's honored guest. Special tributes were made to Minette by Fran Pedersen, President VSL; Michael Williams, Executive Director YAV; David Dik, National Executive Director of Young Audiences; Eric Borenstein, Executive Director VSO and (via video) JoAnn Falletta, Music Director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Composer and Academy of Music Executive Director John Dixon is commissioned to write a work especially for Minette. In addition, The Bettie Minette Cooper Scholarship Fund has been established at the Academy of Music.
Nearly 250 guests attended the gala. Following a cocktail reception, the program began with honors for Minette and music by the Clivia String Trio (Tara Louise Montour, Jocelyn Smith and Michael Daniels). After a four course dinner and a short intermission, dessert was served and then guest auctioneer Rick Overy stepped to the front and began the auctions.
Thank You, VSL Gala Volunteers! Tables were graced with lovely autumn flower arrangements selected by Tina Pagley & June Etheridge and created by Norfolk Florist. Linda Crosby meticulously designed and printed two-sided place cards for each guest at the tables. Peggy Pezzella organized and displayed Silent Auction items on four long tables. Bill & Lynn Ramsey and new VSL members Chris & Kathy Spada helped as greeters, auction spotters and at check out for the auction winners. Donna Hudgins put together media kits for TV, radio and print outlets in Hampton Roads. Of course, there wouldn't have been a gala but for VSL President Fran Pedersen's inspiration and dedicated leadership the entire way.
Also, many thanks to the VSL-YAV committee members mentioned above in the President's Message for their dedicated and tireless work. Special thanks to VSO staff members Eric Borenstein, Karen Philion, Nick Docherty, Norbrian Ronase, Katie Fenimore, Ashley Johnson, Melissa Searing, Tamara Clement and Jillian Pruitt for their guidance, artistry and support.
